Schools opening decision this week

The National Taskforce on Covid-19 will meet early this week to deliberate on schools opening ahead of the second term, which is scheduled to begin next week.

The committee is expected to forward its recommendations to Cabinet.

Chief co-ordinator of the National Response to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Agnes Mahomva, told our Bulawayo Bureau that a final decision will be made this week.

An upsurge in Covid-19 cases has forced the Government to introduce stricter lockdown regulations, while some districts that have recorded increased transmissions have been placed under localised hard lockdowns.

Kwekwe, Karoi and Makonde, among other districts, have recently been placed under localised lockdowns following a spike in cases.

There are concerns reopening schools could lead to an increase in transmissions.

Teacher unions have called on the Government to roll out mass testing at schools ahead of reopening.
