African Union Head of the African Governance Architecture, Ambassador Salah Hammadin says press freedom and the protection of journalists are important to attainment of vision 2063, the continent's blueprint and master plan for transforming into a global powerhouse.

He was speaking during the World Press Freedom Day regional commemorations organized by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in Bulawayo on Monday.

Meanwhile, some senior local journalists say despite the media landscape witnessing legislative reforms in the past few years, there are still existing challenges at institutional levels that need to be addressed for the practitioners to thrive. The call was made by seasoned journalists Pamenus Thuso, Ruth Butaumocho, Kamamgeni Phiri and Tapfuma Machakaire as the country marks World Press Freedom Day.

World Press Freedom Day is recognised on the 3rd of May every year. The day is being marked under the theme, Journalism Under Digital Siege.'
