The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the death of six students - five girls and one boy - from Tynwald High, after a school bus they were travelling in, veered off the road and overturned in Nyanga last night.

In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the students from Harare were traveling to Nyanga when the incident happened at around 1900 hours at the 75-kilometre peg along the Rusape-Nyanga road.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the bus driver allegedly failed to negotiate a sharp curve resulting in the bus rolling several times on a steep slope before landing on its roof.

He added that thirty-nine other students and staff members were injured and are admitted at Nyanga district hospital and Victoria Chitepo provincial hospital in Mutare.

Names of the victims will be released in due course when their next of kin have been advised.

Meanwhile, Nyanga South legislator Supa Mandiwanzira who attended the accident scene last night commended quick reactions by emergency services at Nyanga district hospital and members of the local community during the time of the incident.
