Farmer organisations have raised concerns over seed maize price hikes ahead of the planting season saying it will likely impact on production.

In an interview with Zimpapers Radio News, Zimbabwe commercial farmers union president Shadreck Makombe and Zimbabwe integrated commercial farmers union president, Maivepi Jiti said there is need to ensure maize farming remains attractive as currently, low profit margins attributed to high input costs, make it unviable.

A 25kg bag of seed maize which was retailing for about $11 500 in July this year is now selling for close to $17 000 dollars.

The maize producer prize has been pegged at $32 000 per tonne since the last marketing season.
