Electricity shortages result in slight increase in prices of commodities

Manufacturers and retailers say current electricity shortages being experienced in the country have pushed operating costs, resulting in a slight increase in prices of basic commodities including sugar, cooking oil and flour.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers president Denford Mutashu and Confederation of Zimbabwe Industry president Kurai Mucheza told Zimpapers Radio News that businesses are using alternative power sources which are expensive and therefore push up operating costs with consumers bearing the brunt.

Government also reintroduced duty on some basic goods that were exempted in May this year, a situation economic watchers say has also contributed towards the current price hikes.
